College Scholarships

Program History: Since 2008 the Boys & Girls Clubs of Sonoma Valley Scholarship Program has funded $85,500 in scholarships. 

Minigan Family Scholarship 

Eligibility: Open to any student looking to attend a 4-year University. 

Typical Award Amount: One scholarship of $2,000 

Funding Source: Awards are funded from the Minigan Family Fund for Scholarships at the Community Foundation Sonoma County. Payouts are calculated as 3.75% of the average balance for the fund over the prior 12 quarters. This averaged $1,500 to $2,000 annually. Draws must be approved by Mike & Elizabeth Minigan. 

Scholarship Award Selection Process: A recipient is presented to Mike & Elizabeth Minigan (DP# 3523) for approval before scholarship is awarded. 

Capriola Family Scholarship 

Eligibility: Open to any student looking to attend a 4-year University. 

Typical Award Amount: Two scholarships of $1,000 

Funding Source: A separate fund through the Community Foundation Sonoma County is to be set up in 2021. Currently, awards are being funded from the Boys & Girls Clubs of Sonoma Valley Fund for Scholarships, which is held at the Community Foundation Sonoma County. 

Scholarship Award Selection Process: A recipient is presented to Joe & Renee Capriola (DP# 10674) for approval before scholarship is awarded. 

Anastasio “Stash” Vadez Scholarship 

Eligibility: Open to any student looking to attend a 4-year University. 

Typical Award Amount: $500 

Funding Source: Awards are funded from the Boys & Girls Clubs of Sonoma Valley Fund for Scholarships, which is held at the Community Foundation Sonoma County. Payouts are calculated as 3.75% of the average balance for the fund over the prior 12 quarters and have historically averaged $4,000 annually. 

Scholarship Award Selection Process: Recipient(s) are selected by BGCSV/TSS Staff. 

BGCSV Alumni Scholarship Fund 

Eligibility: Open to any student looking to attend a 4-year University. 

Typical Award Amount: $500 

Funding Source: Awards are funded from the Boys & Girls Clubs of Sonoma Valley Fund for Scholarships, which is held at the Community Foundation Sonoma County. Payouts are calculated as 3.75% of the average balance for the fund over the prior 12 quarters and have historically averaged $4,000 annually.

Mark Perry Music & Art Scholarship 

Eligibility: Open to any student looking to attend a 4-year University. 

Typical Award Amount: One scholarship of $500 

Funding Source: Awards are funded from the Boys & Girls Clubs of Sonoma Valley Fund for Scholarships, which is held at the Community Foundation Sonoma County. Payouts are calculated as 3.75% of the average balance for the fund over the prior 12 quarters and have historically averaged $4,000 annually. 

Scholarship Award Selection Process: A recipient is presented to Tracy Dooley (DP# 9851) for approval before scholarship is awarded. 

Teen Services Alumni Scholarship Fund 

Eligibility: Open to any student planning to attend a junior college, trade school, university, or Ready to Work or Lovin’ Oven Culinary Academy graduate entering the workforce. 

Typical Award Amount: One scholarship of $500-1000 

Funding Source: Awards are funded from the Boys & Girls Clubs of Sonoma Valley Fund for Scholarships, which is held at the Community Foundation Sonoma County. Payouts are calculated as 3.75% of the average balance for the fund over the prior 12 quarters and have historically averaged $4,000 annually. 

Scholarship Award Selection Process: Recipient(s) are selected by BGCSV/TSS Staff. 

Friedman’s Home Improvement Scholarship Fund 

Eligibility: High school graduates with a minimum GPA of 2.5 who are pursuing a higher degree in construction, agriculture, STEM, or a trades program/school, at the school of their choice. Priority for students with financial needs. 

Typical Award Amount: $2,000 to be split among 1-4 scholarships. 

Funding Source: Friedman’s Home Improvement has committed to provide $2,000 each year from 2021-2023 for this scholarship. Checks will be mailed separate from any other Friedman’s Home Improvement donations but may need to be requested through Katie Holden. 

Scholarship Award Selection Process: Recipient(s) are selected by BGCSV/TSS Staff. 

Youth of the Year Scholarships 

Youth of the Year scholarships are awarded to all teen finalists in the Youth of the Year program. The teen selected as the overall Youth of the Year receives a $1,000 scholarship and the other finalists receive scholarships for $500. These scholarships are awarded in the name of . Scholarships are paid from the BGCSV general fund at the end of the school year following the November Youth of the Year event.
